In the last couple of years Algiers, the political, economical and cultural centre of Algeria continued to boom which results in steadily growing traffic congestion. To ease this situation the government pushes forward the extension of the city’s metro line. 4.1 km of the existing part of the underground tunnel system had been completed by a joint venture headed by DYWIDAG International from 2003 until 2007. In March 2008 a German-Algerian-Italian consortium, again under the leadership of DYWIDAG International, was awarded the follow-up order.

The new contract includes the construction of a 2.62 km tunnel, four stations (Bachdjarah 1, Bachdjarah 2, El Harrach Gare, El Harrach Centre), a bridge over a motorway, a river crossing and several ventilation buildings. The new passage is going to extent the metro line from Hai el Badr in the centre of Algiers to El Harrach Centre in the eastern part of the city. The construction works are planned to last for 32 month and will take place on a total length of four kilometres.

For the tunnelling DYWIDAG International is using NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method). Since the city of Algiers features varying geological conditions this flexible method was preferred to using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). Another reason for this decision was the relatively short lengths of the relevant sections. The four stations are built in open cut.
